Location and how to get there

El Palmar is on the coast of Vejer de la Frontera. It borders Conil de la Frontera and the hamlet of Barbate, Zahora. To get there, when you go by the Autovía de la Luz, the A 48, and there take the detour with the A2233 of Vejer de la Frontera. You arrive at a roundabout where there is a petrol station and you take the exit of El Palmar. It takes about 30 minutes from Cadiz, 1 hour and a half from Seville, 10 minutes from Conil and Vejer.

The Palmar has an extension of 4.2 kilometers and an average width of 80 meters in many of its zones. Its sand is fine and white and perfect for a long walk. Its waters are clear and clean and do not have much depth. You have to walk a little so that the water reaches your neck. The road is separated from the beach in many areas by natural dunes and the municipality of Vejer has put wooden walkways to preserve them. For its services and the quality of its beach El Palmar has recently obtained the Q of Tourism quality awarded by the Institute for Spanish Tourism Quality.

Being a protected area you will not find housing developments or large constructions. El Palmar is a rural area of ​​lanes, low houses, log cabins and small businesses.

The extension and the width makes it a perfect beach for a long walk. In addition, there are many companies in the area that do horseback riding at sunrise and sunset. The peace and tranquility you will enjoy, especially out of season, will make you disconnect from everything: work, noise, pollution and stress.

Its orientation makes many areas with breakwaters, perfect for surfers. On hard days the wind raises the fine sand, but there are areas where you can protect yourself. One detail to know is that this beach is not allowed to do windsurfing and kitesurfing.


The beach of El Palmar is in a completely rural environment, although it has all the services you could need. There are supermarkets, small grocery stores, a pharmacy, hostels, rural houses, restaurants, bars, surf schools and much more. One detail that worries the visitor in the summer is the parking area. But do not complicate yourself, there are many car parks scattered along the beach road where you can leave the car all day for no more than € 4.

Surf schools are the queens of El Palmar. The beach conditions make it perfect for both beginners and experts. It is almost obligatory to join a class if you visit the area. They are not expensive and are managed by people from the area with great enthusiasm and love for this sport.

As for the gastronomic offer, each year they open new restaurants, given the wide demand that there is. You can taste traditional Andalusian food, with the best products of the area and at a medium-high price. Taking a rice with carabineros on a terrace of El Palmar is a pleasure that you must experience. There are also avant-garde restaurants and international cuisine.

There is also a party in the area. There are many bars and beach bars where people want to have fun meets. Places like El Cartero, El Dorado or La Selva, fill up daily, especially in summer. Many offer live music concerts and special events. People from all over Spain come expressly to the area to enjoy the atmosphere of its bars.
